  • Brazil to Lebanon: Live transport of cattle 1/2

Each week thousands of live cattle undertake a three week journey from the Amazon port of Belem in Brazil to Beirut in Lebanon. Cattle are crammed into trucks in the burning Amazon heat. For four days they will be unable to move or lay down and will receive no food or water. Those that fall are trapped and injured. At the ship, the use of electric prods for loading further distresses the weakened cattle. Crushed against unfamiliar animals, the cattle can injure each other in their agitation. Heat stroke, trauma and respiratory disease will all be killers on the seventeen day voyage. On arrival in Lebanon, cattle are often slaughtered in inhumane ways that violate religious requirements. After weeks of needless animal suffering the consumer is misled into believing the meat is Halal. ...

Hilton Worldwide, a US-based hotel operator, said it was considering bringing its recently-launched brands, Canopy by Hilton, and Curio to the UAE. (6 Feb 2017) LEAD IN: Lebanese railway lines have been inactive for many years, with train carriages left to rust in the open. Authorities and enthusiasts hope the railway lines can be revived. STORY-LINE: These rusted out carriages are all that remains in this Bekaa region train station that was once a stopping point on the Syria-Lebanon line. Activists as well as Lebanon's transport authority are now trying to revive parts of the country's railway system that once made up a matrix of railroads crisscrossing the Mideast. They say the railways are desperately needed in a tiny country that runs 150 miles along the Mediterranean coast, with most of its highways heavily congested. In his hometown of Rayak in east Lebanon, 86 year old former train driver Asaad Namroud is in his element around trains. "I was on the Beirut route for 18 years. I used to drive from Daraa to Damascus, Beirut and Rayak, carrying 225 tonnes from Beirut on a slope," he says. Namroud enjoys visiting the remains of the train station in his home town and boarding the remaining rusty train that he used to drive. "The train in my blood, in my heart and I will be so excited when I see a train," he says. Nostalgic photographs of Namroud and his colleagues line the wall in the train station. The building of Middle Eastern railways began in the late nineteenth century. Its crowning glory was the Hejaz, built toward the end of the 600 year old Ottoman Empire. It was ostensibly built to shuttle pilgrims from Damascus to the holy Muslim cities of Mecca and Medina. Lebanon's transport authority wants to restart the line from Beirut to the town of Tabarja, 16 miles (23 kilometres) north, which experts say would relieve the capital of its worst gridlock. But there has been no agreement from Lebanon's bickering politicians about how to seek international funding for the plan. "Our first priority right now is to revive the coastal train line (Tripoli, Beirut) to solve the car traffic crisis and contribute to the economy and to make a contribution on the environmental level," says director general of the Railways and Public Transport Authority Ziad Nasr. Lebanon currently has a major pollution problem which a revived rail system could go some way to relieve. MAN Diesel & Turbo is supplying a total of 14 18V48/60 engines for two new power plants in Lebanon which will in future produce electricity for the state-owned supply company Électricité du Liban. The power plants, deliver an output of 194 MW and 78 MW respectively, are being built by a consortium comprising the Danish power plant specialist Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC) and MAN Diesel & Turbo in Zouk and Jiyeh, near Beirut. In addition to the engines, the order from MAN Diesel & Turbo also comprises kits for converting the engines to gas-powered operation: as soon as the region’s gas infrastructure is up and running, the engines will be switched to dual-fuel capability, allowing them to be operated both with liquid as well gaseous fuels. The order for the consortium is worth approximately EUR 270 million. The power plants will use the Diesel Combined Cycle product combination, in which the waste heat from the engines is utilized in order to power a further steam turbine. This achieves an excellent degree of electrical efficiency of more than 48 per cent in total. With a total output of 272 MW, the new power plants will play an important role in safeguarding a stable and reliable supply of electricity to the region: “The two new power plants in Zouk and Jiyeh are an important first step in the efforts to reform the Lebanon's energy sector, efforts which are aimed at markedly improving the entire country's power supply,” says Gebran Bassil, Lebanon’s Minister for Energy and Water. “The power plants in Zouk and Jiyeh are our first order of this size in Lebanon and are an important reference project in the Middle East,” says Dr. René Umlauft, CEO of MAN Diesel & Turbo. “There is a great need in Lebanon to expand energy production. This makes the country highly interesting for our Power Plants division.”

Every week, hundreds of millions of farm animals endure journeys, sometimes lasting days, weeks or months, in cramped conditions on their way to slaughter. They experience stress and exhaustion, rough handling, hunger and thirst, extreme temperatures and unsanitary conditions as they are transported live across the world. As a result, the animals suffer horrific injuries, diseases are spread and many die before reaching their destination. We already have the technology to transport fresh chilled and frozen meat, and the science to prove the welfare benefits of local, humane slaughter. For these reasons, long distance transport is not only cruel, it is unnecessary.
